The genre started as a mod, became the biggest thing in gaming, and fundamentally changed multiplayer design. The formula is deceptively simple: large player counts, a shrinking play zone that forces encounters, looting for randomized gear, and permanent elimination. What makes it work is the tension curve. Every match starts chaotic, settles into tense mid-game positioning, then explodes in frantic endgame fights. No two matches play the same way because of the player count and loot randomization.

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG) popularized the genre in 2017 after Brendan Greene iterated on his own ARMA mod. Fortnite added building mechanics and went free-to-play, becoming a cultural phenomenon. Apex Legends refined the formula with hero abilities and the revolutionary ping system.
Why it matters
Battle royale proved that a mod concept could generate billions and reshape an entire industry's direction. It also demonstrated how quickly genres can saturate, as dozens of failed battle royale games launched chasing the trend before the market consolidated around a few winners.
