Chiptune music was born out of necessity. Early consoles like the NES had a sound chip (the 2A03) with only five channels -- two pulse waves, a triangle, noise, and a simple sample channel. Composers like Koji Kondo and Hip Tanaka had to squeeze memorable melodies out of extreme limitations. What started as a hardware constraint became an aesthetic choice. Modern chiptune artists deliberately use these constraints or emulate them, and the genre thrives in indie games and the demoscene.

The original Super Mario Bros. theme by Koji Kondo is arguably the most recognizable chiptune ever written. Shovel Knight's soundtrack by Jake Kaufman is a modern masterpiece that authentically targets NES hardware limitations.
