Game feel (also called 'kinaesthetics') is why Mario's jump feels perfect and most platformer clones feel off. It's the sum of input responsiveness, animation timing, camera behavior, sound design, and physics tuning. Steve Swink literally wrote the book on it. The key ingredients: responsive controls with minimal input lag, animations that communicate state clearly, and physics that feel believable without being realistic. A game with great feel is satisfying even with all objectives removed.
Example
Celeste has some of the best game feel ever crafted. Madeline's dash has a tiny screen freeze, a burst of particles, hair color change, and a punchy sound effect. The coyote time and input buffering are tuned to perfection. Movement itself is the reward.
Why it matters
Game feel is the thing players notice when it's bad and take for granted when it's good. It's the single biggest differentiator in crowded genres like platformers and action games. Developers who master it create games people describe as 'tight' and 'responsive' without knowing why.
