Horror has become the most accessible genre for indie developers because fear does not require big budgets. A dark corridor, a well-timed sound effect, and a creepy atmosphere can be more effective than photorealistic graphics. The genre also has a built-in marketing machine: streamers and YouTubers constantly seek out horror games because scared reactions drive massive viewership. This creates a virtuous cycle where small horror games get played by big creators, generating millions of impressions for games that cost almost nothing to make. The PSX-style low-poly horror aesthetic has become its own subgenre, proving that graphical limitations can enhance horror rather than diminish it.

Lethal Company was made essentially by one developer, Zeekerss, using simple 3D assets and oppressive atmosphere. It became one of the most-streamed games of late 2023, selling millions of copies largely because every major content creator was playing it with friends and screaming.
Why it matters
Horror is the great equalizer in indie development. You do not need beautiful art, complex systems, or 30 hours of content. You need to understand pacing, tension, and the psychology of fear. A solo dev with a good understanding of horror design can compete with any studio.
