Momentum systems tie a character's speed and inertia to gameplay outcomes. Faster movement means longer jumps, harder hits, wider turns, and more commitment to your trajectory. Unlike instant-response movement where you stop and start on a dime, momentum-based movement has acceleration curves and deceleration penalties. This creates a skill expression layer around maintaining speed: players who master the flow state of chaining momentum-preserving moves achieve things that stop-and-start players never can. The tradeoff is that momentum makes precise control harder, which is why tuning the balance between responsive and weighty is so critical.
Example
Titanfall 2's movement system is a momentum masterclass. Slide-hopping, wall-running, and grapple-slingshotting chain together to let skilled players cross maps at absurd speeds without ever touching the ground. Sonic the Hedgehog's entire identity is built on momentum: rolling downhill builds speed, running uphill costs it, and loops require enough velocity to complete. Skate uses momentum physics to make every trick feel earned by the speed you built approaching it.
Why it matters
Momentum systems reward mastery with an intoxicating sense of flow. They create a visible skill gap where experienced players move through spaces in ways that look completely different from beginners. The best momentum systems make speed itself the reward, turning traversal into the most satisfying part of the game.
