The Nintendo 64 (1996) stuck with cartridges while Sony and Sega went with CDs, a decision that was both its greatest strength and fatal flaw. Cartridges meant zero load times and rock-solid performance, enabling silky-smooth gameplay in Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time. But they also meant higher costs, limited storage, and a third-party exodus to PlayStation. What the N64 lacked in library breadth, it made up for in landmark titles. Its analog stick, rumble pack, and four controller ports pioneered features that became standard. The N64 sold around 33 million units, respectable but a clear second place to Sony.
