The NES (Famicom in Japan, 1983) arrived in North America in 1985 when retailers wanted nothing to do with video games. Nintendo deliberately styled it as an 'entertainment system' and bundled R.O.B. the robot to make it look like a toy rather than a console. The strategy worked. Strict quality control via the Nintendo Seal of Quality rebuilt consumer trust, and a lineup of generation-defining games turned the NES into a cultural phenomenon. It sold over 61 million units worldwide and single-handedly proved that the home console market wasn't dead, just waiting for someone to do it right.

Super Mario Bros. (1985) shipped as a pack-in title with the NES and sold over 40 million copies. Its World 1-1 is still considered the greatest tutorial level ever designed, teaching players to run, jump, and explore without a single line of text.
