Revive mechanics let teammates resurrect downed players during gameplay, typically with a timed channel that leaves the reviver vulnerable. The design creates a risk-reward moment: do you push to revive your ally under fire, or play it safe and fight outnumbered? Revive timers, protected-versus-exposed states, and whether revived players return at full or partial health are all critical tuning variables. Some games add revive items, dedicated healer roles, or limited revive tokens to control how often teams can recover from mistakes. The mechanic fundamentally changes multiplayer dynamics by making team preservation as important as individual performance.

Example

Apex Legends layers multiple revive systems: downed players can be revived on the spot with a channel, and fully eliminated players can be respawned at beacons using their banner (which must be retrieved from their death box within a time limit). This creates dramatic retrieval missions mid-match. Battlefield's medic class defined team-based revival, with skilled medics turning the tide of battles by keeping squads alive under fire.

Why it matters

Revive mechanics transform multiplayer from a collection of individual performances into a genuinely cooperative experience. They create the most dramatic moments in team games: clutch revives under fire, desperate crawls toward allies, and the agonizing decision of whether a rescue attempt is worth the risk.
