Shield mechanics let players block incoming damage, typically at the cost of stamina, movement speed, or the ability to attack simultaneously. The design decisions include: does the shield block all damage or a percentage? Does blocking drain stamina? Can shields break? Do different attacks have different guard reactions (stagger, chip damage, guard break)? The best shield systems create a dynamic where blocking is safe but inefficient compared to parrying or dodging, making the shield a tool for learning encounters before graduating to riskier strategies.

Example

Dark Souls gives you a 100% physical block shield early on, which is a brilliant teaching tool -- new players can turtle behind it while learning enemy patterns, then gradually transition to dodging as they improve. Zelda: Breath of the Wild's shields have durability and can be used for surfing, turning a defensive tool into a traversal mechanic. For Honor's guard system requires choosing between three guard directions, making blocking an active skill rather than a passive state.

Why it matters

Shield mechanics define the defensive identity of a combat system. They create the fundamental choice between safety and aggression that drives moment-to-moment combat decisions. For devs, how powerful shields are relative to dodging sets the entire tone of combat -- defensive and methodical vs aggressive and reactive.
