It is why your custom character feels more important than the most beautifully designed NPC. Every crafting system, base builder, and character creator leverages this bias -- the labor itself creates emotional investment that no amount of polish on pre-built content can match.

Minecraft survival mode makes you mine every block, and players defend their ugly dirt houses with their lives. In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, players spent hundreds of hours arranging their islands.
