Coined by Johan Huizinga and popularized in game studies, the magic circle is the agreement players make to treat the game world as real. Inside the circle, a chess piece isn't carved wood -- it's a bishop. Pixels aren't just colors -- that's your character dying. Breaking the magic circle (a jarring bug, a toxic player, intrusive microtransactions) snaps players back to reality and destroys immersion. The strongest games make you forget the circle exists entirely.

Example

Journey creates one of the strongest magic circles in gaming. When you encounter another anonymous player in the desert, you genuinely feel companionship and loss -- even though you're just watching a robed figure hop around. The design protects the circle by preventing voice chat and hiding usernames until the credits.
