The Proteus Effect, named by researchers Nick Yee and Jeremy Bailenson, describes how a person's avatar appearance in a virtual environment changes their actual behavior. Players given taller avatars negotiate more confidently. Players with attractive avatars are more socially open. Players with villain-coded appearances act more aggressively. The effect works because people unconsciously conform to the expectations associated with their digital appearance, even when they know it is not real.
