When what a game is about and what you actually do in it tell the same story, everything clicks.
Theming and mechanics alignment (sometimes called ludonarrative harmony) is when a game's systems reinforce its narrative and emotional themes. Papers, Please is about the dehumanizing grind of bureaucracy, and the mechanic is literally stamping passports under time pressure. Celeste is about overcoming anxiety and depression, and the mechanic is climbing a punishing mountain one screen at a time. When theme and mechanics pull in different directions, you get ludonarrative dissonance: Nathan Drake cracks jokes between murdering hundreds of people. Alignment doesn't require deep narrative; even Tetris aligns its theme of order versus chaos with its mechanics perfectly.
Example
Return of the Obra Dinn asks you to identify how 60 crew members died on a ghost ship. The mechanic of piecing together frozen death scenes mirrors the detective theme perfectly. Every system serves the mystery. Contrast this with open-world RPGs where the story screams urgency ('the world is ending!') while mechanics let you spend 40 hours picking flowers and playing card games.
Why it matters
Games that achieve theming and mechanics alignment feel like unified artistic statements rather than collections of systems bolted to a story. They produce the deepest emotional impacts in the medium because the player doesn't just watch the theme unfold; they live it through every button press.
