The pricing announcement that torched Unity's developer trust in September 2023, then got canceled on September 12, 2024 after a year of damage control.
Unity's proposed Runtime Fee tried to charge qualifying developers based on installs, which instantly detonated trust because installs are a terrible billing primitive and because the company appeared willing to rewrite the social contract after developers had already committed years of work. Studios publicly threatened to leave, middleware partners revolted, and Godot suddenly looked less like an underdog and more like an escape hatch. On September 12, 2024 Unity officially canceled the fee, but the reputational crater remained.
