An unreliable narrator feeds you information that turns out to be incomplete, distorted, or flat-out false. Games are uniquely powerful with this trope because the player's own actions and perceptions become part of the deception. You're not just watching someone be misled -- you are the one being misled. The reveal forces you to mentally replay everything you've experienced, seeing it in a completely new light. It's a narrative gut punch that only interactive media can deliver at full force.

In Silent Hill 2, the protagonist James's account of events slowly unravels as the game reveals the horrifying truth he's been suppressing. Outer Wilds uses the unreliable framework differently -- the universe's time loop means information you trust is constantly being recontextualized as you learn more.
Why it matters
The unreliable narrator exploits the unique trust relationship between player and game. When done well, it creates replay value and emotional impact that linear media can rarely match.
