Vertical remixing (or vertical layering) is a dynamic music technique where a piece of music is composed as multiple simultaneous layers that can be independently activated or deactivated. A calm exploration layer might play alone while walking, then a percussion layer kicks in when enemies are detected, a bass layer adds when combat starts, and a choir layer blazes during a boss fight, all without any jarring transitions because every layer was composed to harmonize with every other layer. The technique requires composers to think architecturally rather than linearly, designing music as a system of compatible modules rather than a fixed sequence.

DOOM (2016) is a masterclass in vertical remixing. Mick Gordon composed the soundtrack in stems that ramp up with combat intensity. Exploring a quiet room plays ambient synths. Spotting a demon adds rhythmic elements. Entering full combat unleashes the iconic heavy metal riffs. The transitions feel seamless because every layer shares the same tempo, key, and harmonic structure. The player never hears a music 'cut' despite the soundtrack being wildly dynamic.
Why it matters
Vertical remixing solves the oldest problem in game music: how to make music respond to gameplay without awkward crossfades or cuts. It's more elegant than horizontal resequencing (jumping between different tracks) because the music never actually changes songs. The player experiences a continuously evolving soundscape that feels composed specifically for their moment-to-moment experience.
