The format that proves text, portraits, and ruthless route design can carry a whole game by themselves.
Visual novels foreground reading, character routes, choice structure, and branching story logic. Their mechanics are often minimal on paper, but the form can still be ferociously interactive because the act of choosing, revisiting, and recontextualizing routes becomes the game. The best ones weaponize structure as hard as any action game weaponizes level design.
Example
Steins;Gate, Fate/stay night, The House in Fata Morgana, Danganronpa, and Doki Doki Literature Club all show wildly different tonal and structural uses of the form.
Why it matters
Visual novels keep expanding the industry's literary range and remain one of the cleanest spaces for experimentation with branching narrative design.
