Originally developed at MIT on a PDP-10, Zork was commercialized by Infocom starting in 1980, split into three parts for home computers. Its parser understood complex multi-word commands far beyond anything players had seen. The Great Underground Empire was rich with puzzles, humor, and genuine narrative craft. Infocom's packaging included 'feelies' (physical props and documents) that served as both copy protection and immersion tools. Zork sold over a million copies and established Infocom as the gold standard for interactive fiction.

The opening line, 'You are standing in an open field west of a white house,' became as iconic as Colossal Cave's intro. The grue, an unseen monster lurking in dark rooms ('It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue'), became one of gaming's most memorable running jokes.

Zork elevated text adventures from hobbyist curiosity to commercial powerhouse. Infocom's sophisticated parser and quality writing proved that games could be literary experiences. The company's approach to worldbuilding and puzzle design influenced decades of adventure game development.
