Before FMOD and Wwise, there was SoundTracker. Amiga composers like Chris Huelsbeck and Tim Follin worked with four mono sample channels and coaxed orchestral-feeling arrangements out of them through clever panning, modulation, and sample-trickery. The .MOD file format became the universal language of demoscene and indie game music for nearly a decade, and modern chiptune scenes still trace their roots directly back to it.

Example

Turrican 2 and Agony are era-defining Amiga soundtracks. The .MOD format went on to power early 90s PC shareware like Unreal's tracker-based OST. Deadmau5 famously still uses tracker interfaces as part of his workflow.
