The horror game that took away your weapons and left you with nothing but a lantern and your panic.
Frictional Games' Amnesia: The Dark Descent redefined survival horror by removing combat entirely. You wake in a Prussian castle with no memory and no way to fight the grotesque creatures stalking its halls. Your only options are hiding, running, and managing a sanity meter that deteriorates in darkness. Staying in the dark too long causes hallucinations; using your limited lantern oil makes you visible. This tension between light and dark, safety and sanity, created a horror experience so intense that YouTube Let's Play reaction videos of Amnesia essentially launched the modern gaming content creator ecosystem.
Example
Amnesia became one of the first games to go viral through YouTube Let's Plays. PewDiePie's early Amnesia videos, featuring his terrified reactions to the game's monsters, were among the videos that launched his channel to massive popularity.
Why it matters
Amnesia proved that vulnerability is scarier than empowerment and that removing combat from horror makes it more horrifying. It influenced every major horror game that followed and inadvertently helped create the Let's Play genre on YouTube.
