Among Us was released by three-person studio Innersloth in 2018 to almost no audience. Then in mid-2020, Twitch streamers and YouTubers discovered it during COVID lockdowns, and it exploded. The premise was simple: crewmates complete tasks on a spaceship while one or two impostors secretly sabotage and kill. When a body is found, everyone debates who the impostor is and votes to eject someone. The genius was in the social dynamics. Lying to your friends' faces, reading body language through gameplay decisions, and the tension of emergency meetings created unforgettable moments. It hit 500 million monthly active players at its peak.

Example

The phrase 'That's sus' entered mainstream vocabulary through Among Us. Watching a friend confidently accuse someone else while being the impostor themselves became a universal shared gaming experience during lockdowns.

Why it matters

Among Us demonstrated that social mechanics and streamer appeal could make any game a phenomenon regardless of production value. It proved that timing, community, and word-of-mouth can matter more than marketing budgets.
