A puzzle game so deep that the community is still finding secrets months after launch.
Animal Well by solo developer Billy Basso is a metroidvania built on layers of secrets buried inside secrets. The surface game is a gorgeous, atmospheric puzzle platformer where you explore a strange well populated by cryptic animal guardians. But underneath that lies a second layer of hidden puzzles, and beneath that, a third layer so obscure it required community-wide collaboration to crack. Every item has multiple uses that players discover organically. The game respects your intelligence so thoroughly it never tells you what anything does; it trusts you to experiment.
Example
Players discovered that the UV light item could reveal hidden messages on walls throughout the entire game, leading to a community-driven ARG that required decoding symbols, overlaying map sections, and coordinating discoveries across hundreds of players online.
Why it matters
Animal Well revived the idea that games can contain genuine mysteries that take weeks or months to unravel. It proved that a single developer can create something with more depth and replay value than most AAA open worlds.
