Founded in 2016 as the gaming arm of Megan Ellison's film company Annapurna Pictures, Annapurna Interactive built the most decorated indie publishing label in the industry: What Remains of Edith Finch, Outer Wilds, Sayonara Wild Hearts, Stray, Florence, Cocoon, Neon White, Solar Ash, Open Roads. In September 2024, the entire ~25-person Annapurna Interactive team resigned en masse over a dispute with parent company Annapurna Pictures about studio independence — a near-unprecedented event in publishing.

Example

Outer Wilds (2019) is widely considered one of the most artistically singular games of its generation. Annapurna Interactive funded it, marketed it, and gave the developers (Mobius Digital) full creative control — the kind of arrangement that defined the label's reputation.

Why it matters

Annapurna Interactive defined the prestige indie publishing model — small label, high-quality slate, deep creative trust. The 2024 staff exodus is a live experiment in whether that label brand survives without the team that built it, and what happens to indie prestige publishing in the 2025+ market.
