Pure competitive FPS design where map control and movement mastery matter more than loadouts or unlock trees.
Arena shooters are built around equal starts, weapon pickups, health and armor control, and movement systems that let top players look superhuman. The genre asks players to learn routes, timing, verticality, and dueling rhythm instead of leaning on progression systems. It is elegant, merciless, and historically terrible at mass-market compromise.
Example
Quake, Unreal Tournament, and Halo's arena DNA remain the obvious reference points, while modern indies keep trying to bottle that same duel-and-map-control magic.
Why it matters
Arena shooters set the gold standard for mechanically transparent competitive FPS design. Every modern shooter is either borrowing from them or reacting against them.
