Arkane Studios

The French/American studio that kept the immersive-sim genre alive single-handedly — and may have just lost the battle.

Founded in 1999 by Raphaël Colantonio in Lyon, Arkane shipped Arx Fatalis (2002) and developed parts of Bioshock 2 before being acquired by ZeniMax in 2010. The studio's flagship Dishonored series (2012, 2016) and Prey (2017) became the modern reference for immersive-sim design — a niche genre Arkane defended longer than anyone. Arkane Austin's Redfall (2023) launched broken and was abandoned with the studio's closure in 2024 by Microsoft. Arkane Lyon survives, working on Marvel's Blade.

Example

Dishonored (2012) and its sequels were widely praised but commercially moderate — the immersive-sim genre's small audience has always made the budget math difficult. Bethesda's pivot of Arkane Austin to live-service shooters was widely blamed for Redfall's failure.

Why it matters

Arkane is the cautionary tale of a craft studio pushed toward genres it doesn't believe in. The Austin closure was one of the most-discussed events of the 2024 layoff wave, and the immersive-sim genre lost its largest active developer.
