Chat knows exactly what you should do, and they will never stop telling you, especially when they are wrong.

Backseat gaming is the act of telling someone how to play while watching them -- whether from the couch or from a Twitch chat of 50,000 people. It is as old as gaming itself, but the streaming era turned it into a cultural phenomenon. Every streamer has dealt with chat screaming 'GO LEFT' or 'USE THE OTHER WEAPON' or 'YOU MISSED A CHEST' in an endless torrent of unsolicited advice. Some streamers ban it outright, others lean into it for comedy, and a few actually crowdsource their decisions. The tension between player autonomy and audience participation is one of streaming's defining dynamics.

Example

Twitch chat during any FromSoftware playthrough becomes a wall of conflicting build advice. DrDisrespect famously rages at backseat gamers as part of his persona. Many streamers now use 'no backseating' as an explicit chat rule, sometimes enforced by moderator bots.

Why it matters

Backseat gaming highlights the fundamental tension in gaming content creation -- the audience wants to participate, but the creator needs to own their experience. How streamers navigate this dynamic often defines their community culture and viewer retention.
