Those short, context-aware voice lines NPCs shout during gameplay -- 'Reloading!' 'Over there!' 'He's flanking!'
Barks are short, triggered voice lines that characters say in response to gameplay events without entering a formal dialogue system. Callouts are a specific subset -- combat barks where characters communicate tactical information. The system tracks game state (combat phase, enemy proximity, player health, environmental hazards) and selects appropriate lines from a massive pool. Good bark systems include cooldown timers to prevent repetition, priority levels so critical callouts override casual chatter, and contextual awareness so characters don't say cheerful things during tragic moments. A single NPC might have hundreds of bark lines recorded to cover every situation.
Example
In Halo, the Grunts' panicked barks ('Run away!') when their Elite leader dies are both functional (telling you the squad is broken) and hilarious. The Division 2's enemies shout tactical callouts about your position that actually reflect their AI behavior, creating the illusion of coordinated intelligence.
Why it matters
Barks are the connective tissue between gameplay systems and narrative atmosphere. Without them, characters feel like mannequins shuffling through a world. With them, every NPC feels alive and responsive, and combat gains a layer of tension and personality.
