Breadcrumbing

The technique of placing subtle visual or environmental cues that guide players toward the next objective without explicit markers.

Good breadcrumbing respects player intelligence. A distant lit window in a dark skyline, a trail of spent shell casings, a distinctive piece of graffiti repeating through levels — these pull the eye without announcing themselves. The craft is leading the player somewhere they think they decided to go. When it works, you never see the leash. When it fails, the player wanders lost and blames the level design.

Example

Half-Life 2's Route Kanal section uses pigeon flocks flying toward the next area. Half-Life: Alyx places interactable lights along paths. Dishonored threads subtle rune-glow cues through levels. Uncharted famously yellow-paints grab-points, which is breadcrumbing's loudest, most-debated form.

Why it matters

Breadcrumbing is how level designers direct without dictating. It is the difference between a game that feels open and explorable and one that feels like a corridor dressed up. Learning to read breadcrumbs also makes you a better player.
