Cloud looks like pure late-90s cool: giant sword, impossible hair, detached mercenary affect. Final Fantasy VII then spends tens of hours dismantling that pose and revealing a traumatized, unreliable, deeply fragile character underneath. That contrast is exactly why Cloud survived the PlayStation era and became Square Enix's most durable face outside the Chocobo economy.
Example
The original FF7, Advent Children, Kingdom Hearts cameos, and the Remake trilogy all reinterpret Cloud for different generations, but the core tension remains the same: swagger on the outside, cracked selfhood inside. That mix keeps him culturally portable.
Why it matters
Cloud matters because he helped export JRPG character archetypes to a global mainstream audience. He is still the reference point for moody anime swordsmen, but unlike most imitators, his writing actually cashes the aesthetic check.
