Every game has a heartbeat: a short sequence of actions players repeat over and over. In Diablo, it's kill monsters, get loot, equip loot, kill harder monsters. In Stardew Valley, it's plant crops, tend farm, harvest, sell, expand. The best core loops feel intrinsically satisfying on their own, even before progression systems pile on top. If your loop isn't fun after 30 seconds, no amount of rewards will save it.

Example

Hades nails this perfectly. Fight through rooms, collect boons, die, unlock permanent upgrades, then fight again with new knowledge and power. Each run takes 20-30 minutes but the loop is so tight that 'one more run' turns into five.

Why it matters

The core loop is the foundation everything else is built on. If it doesn't feel good, players leave no matter how gorgeous your world is. For gamers, recognizing the loop helps you understand why certain games consume your life.
