A Half-Life mod that became the most important competitive shooter of all time.
Counter-Strike started as a Half-Life mod created by Minh Le and Jess Cliffe in 1999, and Valve was smart enough to acquire it. The premise was simple: terrorists versus counter-terrorists, one life per round, buy your weapons with earned money. No respawns meant every decision carried weight, and the economy system added a layer of strategy that pure aim-based shooters lacked. CS 1.6 dominated internet cafes and LAN parties worldwide for nearly a decade. Its maps (Dust2, Inferno, Nuke) became as recognizable as any game environment ever created.
Example
Dust2 is arguably the most played multiplayer map in gaming history. Its clean sightlines, balanced layout, and iconic mid doors AWP battle have made it a competitive staple for over two decades across every version of Counter-Strike.
Why it matters
Counter-Strike defined tactical shooters and built the foundation for competitive FPS esports. Its economy system, round-based format, and emphasis on teamwork influenced every tactical shooter that followed.
