Dating sims make romantic pursuit the core game mechanic. Players interact with a cast of characters, make dialogue choices, manage stats, and navigate branching storylines to pursue romantic relationships. The genre ranges from earnest romance to comedy to surprisingly deep character studies. What looks like a niche genre on the surface has influenced mainstream gaming significantly, as romance systems in BioWare RPGs, Fire Emblem's relationship mechanics, and Persona's social links all trace their DNA back to dating sims.

Persona 5 integrates dating sim mechanics into a full JRPG, making social relationships both narratively meaningful and mechanically rewarding. Stardew Valley's romance system is one of its most beloved features. Dream Daddy and Hatoful Boyfriend brought the genre to wider Western audiences through humor and genuine emotional depth, with the latter being a dating sim about pigeons that is somehow both hilarious and heartbreaking.
Why it matters
Dating sims proved that emotional connection and relationship building are powerful gameplay motivators.
