A genre dedicated to going one floor deeper than your better judgment says you should.
Dungeon crawlers focus on party survival, loot, mapping, and the tension of pushing deeper into hostile spaces. Some are first-person grid crawlers. Some are real-time loot grinders. Some are brutally turn-based. The shared fantasy is descent: your resources tighten while the dungeon gets weirder and meaner.
Example
Wizardry, Etrian Odyssey, Legend of Grimrock, Diablo, and Darkest Dungeon all express the dungeon-crawling instinct through different combat systems and pacing styles.
Why it matters
Dungeon crawlers sit near the root of multiple major RPG branches, from roguelikes to action RPGs to blobber party design. The form is old, but the appetite for descent never left.
