Dynamic audio mixing is the behind-the-scenes engineering that keeps a game's sound from becoming a muddy mess. When 30 enemies are shooting, a helicopter is overhead, and your character is reloading, the system has to decide what you hear most clearly. It uses priority systems, distance attenuation, occlusion (sound blocked by walls), and ducking (lowering music when dialogue plays). Modern engines like Wwise and FMOD give designers granular control over how every sound layer behaves in context.

In The Last of Us Part II, audio dynamically muffles and reverberates when you're inside buildings versus outside. Battlefield V uses HDR audio that lets quiet footsteps remain audible even during massive explosions by intelligently compressing the dynamic range.
