Eco Rounds
@esports

Intentionally buying little or nothing to save money for a fully equipped round later, turning poverty into a strategic weapon.

In economy-based tactical shooters, teams cannot buy full equipment every round. After losing rounds or spending heavily, teams must eco (economize) by buying cheap pistols or nothing at all to bank money for a future full-buy round. But eco rounds are not throwaway rounds. Smart teams use them to gather information, attempt hero plays with cheap weapons that could steal a round and devastate the opponent's economy, or run unusual strategies that only work because the other team does not expect serious resistance. The economy metagame creates a push-pull dynamic where winning a round matters, but how you win it (and what equipment you pick up from dead opponents) can matter just as much.

Example

In CS2, a team that loses the pistol round and the following round often does a full eco on round 3 to guarantee a complete buy on round 4. But teams like NAVI have been known to force-buy on the second round with SMGs and catch opponents off guard. In Valorant, eco rounds with Sheriffs (a powerful but cheap pistol) have produced some of the most exciting clutch moments in VCT history because one headshot can drop a fully armored opponent.

Why it matters

Eco rounds add a resource management layer that makes tactical shooters far deeper than pure aim competitions. Understanding economy turns spectating into a strategic experience where you can predict team behavior based on their bank balance. The best teams win eco rounds they should lose and never lose to ecos themselves.
