Puzzles baked into the world itself, where the environment is both the question and the answer.
Environmental puzzles use the game world's architecture, physics, lighting, or spatial relationships as puzzle elements rather than abstract logic challenges. The Witness built an entire island where every structure, shadow, and tree placement was a clue to nearby puzzles. Breath of the Wild's shrines use physics systems as puzzle components. Portal turned architectural spaces into logic problems. The best environmental puzzles reward observation and spatial reasoning, making players feel clever for noticing something that was always right in front of them.
Example
The Witness contains puzzles where you must align your perspective with the environment to see the solution. A panel near apple trees requires you to notice that the tree shadows form the puzzle solution when viewed from the right angle. The puzzle, the clue, and the world are all one unified thing.
Why it matters
Environmental puzzles represent game design at its most elegant because they make the world itself interactive and meaningful. Every rock, shadow, and structure becomes potentially significant, training players to observe carefully rather than just follow waypoints.
