The token-bound-account standard that lets NFTs own other NFTs, unlocking inventory-carrying game items.
ERC-6551 gives every NFT its own wallet, meaning a character NFT can own equipment NFTs, consumables, and currency without the player juggling transfers. For game design, this is a primitive: a hero cartridge can literally hold a sword, which can literally hold a gem, each composable and tradeable independently. It is one of the first onchain standards that feels genuinely game-native rather than finance-retrofit.
Example
Sapienz uses ERC-6551 so character NFTs own their loot. Bario DMG-01 cartridges take advantage of TBA-style composition. Numerous Base-chain game projects in 2024 shipped with ERC-6551 inventory architectures.
Why it matters
ERC-6551 is infrastructure for the kinds of games onchain advocates have always promised — character-centric, composable, and with true item ownership. It closes a gap between blockchain primitives and game-design expectations.
