Eric 'ConcernedApe' Barone graduated from college in 2011, took a part-time movie theater job, and started building Stardew Valley solo in his free time as a Harvest Moon-inspired farming sim. He coded, drew, animated, designed, wrote, and composed every part of the game. Released in 2016 via publisher ChuckleFish, Stardew Valley sold over 30M copies by 2024. Barone has continued to ship major free updates personally for nine years and is now also developing Haunted Chocolatier as his second solo project.

Example

Stardew Valley's 1.6 update (2024) added more content than most paid expansions in AAA — eight years after launch, free, developed solo. Barone has refused publisher offers to monetize the game further or hire a team to scale operations.

Why it matters

Barone is the modern blueprint for the one-person studio operating at AAA-revenue scale. The 'Stardew model' — one creator, one vision, indefinite free post-launch support — has become an aspirational reference across indie development.
