The 1976 console that pioneered interchangeable cartridges, predating the Atari 2600 by a full year.
Before the Channel F, consoles had games soldered into the hardware. Fairchild's engineer Jerry Lawson led the team that invented the plug-in cartridge format, and it changed gaming forever. The Channel F was commercially overshadowed by the Atari 2600 that followed, but every subsequent cartridge-based console owes it a debt. Lawson, one of the few Black engineers in early Silicon Valley, has since been recognized as one of the foundational figures of gaming.
Example
Only about 250,000 units sold worldwide. Videocart 1 (Tic-Tac-Toe/Shooting Gallery/Doodle/Quadradoodle) was the pack-in cartridge. Google commemorated Lawson with a Doodle in 2022, and the Strong Museum of Play enshrined him in its hall of fame.
Why it matters
Without the cartridge, there is no NES, no Game Boy, no Nintendo Switch. Recognizing the Channel F and Jerry Lawson reframes gaming history and highlights how often foundational innovations get attributed to later commercial winners.
