Fan Theories

The community builds deeper lore in forum posts than some studios put in their actual games.

Fan theories are community-created explanations for unexplained game lore, hidden connections between titles, or speculative backstories for characters and worlds. They thrive in games that leave narrative gaps for players to fill -- intentionally or not. The best fan theories take seemingly random details and weave them into compelling narratives that sometimes become more popular than the official lore. Game developers exist on a spectrum from actively encouraging theorizing (FromSoftware, Supergiant) to having their games completely recontextualized by theories they never intended (Nintendo, Valve).

Example

MatPat's Game Theory channel built an empire on fan theories, from Five Nights at Freddy's timeline breakdowns to the 'Mario is a sociopath' analysis. The Zelda timeline was a fan theory for decades before Nintendo made it semi-official. Elden Ring's deliberately obscure lore spawned thousands of VaatiVidya-style deep dives piecing together the story from item descriptions.

Why it matters

Fan theories extend a game's cultural footprint far beyond its play time. They turn passive consumers into active participants in world-building and create content ecosystems that keep games relevant between releases. Developers who design narrative gaps for theorists build some of the most engaged communities in gaming.
