Flow state, coined by psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, is the mental state where a person is fully immersed in an activity with energized focus and complete absorption. In gaming, it happens when difficulty perfectly matches the player's current skill level -- too easy and you get bored, too hard and you get frustrated. The best game designers engineer flow by dynamically adjusting challenge, pacing encounters, and giving players just enough mastery to feel powerful while still being pushed. When you look up and three hours have vanished, that was flow.
