How charging nothing upfront became the most profitable model in gaming.
Free-to-play removed the purchase barrier entirely and replaced it with in-game spending on cosmetics, convenience, and content. The model exploded first in Asian MMOs, then mobile gaming, and finally conquered PC and console through games like Fortnite. The psychology is simple: get millions of players in the door for free, then monetize a small percentage of heavy spenders. When done ethically, it democratizes access. When done poorly, it becomes predatory.
Example
Fortnite generated over $9 billion in revenue from 2018 to 2020 without ever charging for the base game. Genshin Impact proved F2P could work for a premium open-world RPG, earning $3 billion in its first year through its gacha system.
Why it matters
F2P fundamentally changed what gamers expect to pay and how studios design games. Every design decision in an F2P game is filtered through monetization, which is why understanding the model helps you see why certain games feel the way they do.
