The Japanese designer behind Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, and The Last Guardian — and the patron saint of minimalist game storytelling.
Joined Sony Computer Entertainment Japan Studio in 1997 to lead Team Ico, where he directed Ico (2001), Shadow of the Colossus (2005), and The Last Guardian (2016). His 'design by subtraction' philosophy — strip every element that isn't load-bearing — became one of the most influential design frameworks in narrative-action games. After leaving Sony in 2014 he founded genDESIGN, where he is reportedly developing a new project still funded in part by Sony.
Example
Ico (2001) shipped with no HUD, almost no dialogue, and a single mechanic — holding the hand of an NPC girl through a castle. Critics initially called it too sparse; it's now considered one of the most influential games ever made for environmental storytelling and emotional minimalism.
Why it matters
Ueda's 'design by subtraction' is one of the most-cited design philosophies in modern narrative game development. Journey, Inside, Limbo, and dozens of art-house indies trace their visual and structural ideas to his work.
