When the Game Boy launched in 1989, competitors mocked its lack of color, backlight, and processing power. Sega's Game Gear and Atari's Lynx were technically superior in every measurable way. But Nintendo's Gunpei Yokoi designed around battery life and durability, not specs. The Game Boy ran for over 30 hours on four AA batteries while the Game Gear drained six batteries in under 5 hours. Bundling Tetris was a masterstroke; it made the device appeal to everyone, not just kids. The Game Boy line sold over 118 million units across its lifespan, proving that portability beats power.

A Game Boy survived a bombing during the Gulf War in 1991. The case was melted and charred, but the unit still worked and played Tetris. Nintendo put it on display at the Nintendo Store in New York, where it still runs today.
