Game Jam

48 hours, zero sleep, and somehow a playable game at the end of it.

A game jam is a timed competition where developers create a game from scratch, usually in 48 to 72 hours around a surprise theme. Ludum Dare and Global Game Jam are the big ones, drawing tens of thousands of participants worldwide. The constraints force brutal prioritization -- you learn more about shipping a product in one weekend than most people learn in a year. Many successful indie titles like Celeste and Superhot started as jam prototypes that proved their core loop was addictive enough to expand into full releases.

Example

Celeste began as a PICO-8 game jam entry by Maddy Thorson and Noel Berry during a 2016 jam, then evolved into the award-winning platformer that sold over a million copies.

Why it matters

Game jams are the single best training ground for aspiring devs. They teach you to scope ruthlessly, finish what you start, and discover whether an idea has legs before you spend years on it.
