Gorogoa by Jason Roberts is a hand-illustrated puzzle game played across four panels that you can rearrange, stack, zoom into, and layer on top of each other. Each panel is a window into a scene, and by manipulating how they connect, you create pathways between seemingly unrelated images. A doorway in one panel lines up with a staircase in another. Zooming into a detail reveals an entirely new scene. The puzzles work through visual logic and spatial creativity rather than traditional game logic. Roberts spent five years hand-drawing every frame, and the result is unlike anything else in gaming.

Example

Zooming into a bowl on a table to discover a landscape inside it, then layering that landscape panel over a city panel so a bridge connects the two scenes, letting a character walk from one reality into another. It plays like an interactive dream.

Why it matters

Gorogoa invented a puzzle mechanic that had never existed before and may never be replicated. It proved that a single person's artistic vision, given enough time and stubbornness, can produce something genuinely unprecedented in the medium.
