Grand Theft Auto III moved the series from a top-down perspective into a fully 3D open world, and gaming was never the same. Liberty City in 2001 felt alive in a way no game world had before. Pedestrians walked the streets, radio stations played licensed music, and the player could ignore missions entirely to just explore and cause chaos. Rockstar North created the template for the modern open-world game: a living city full of activities, a main story you could pursue at your own pace, and the freedom to approach situations however you wanted. The controversy it generated only boosted its profile.

Example

Jacking a car, turning on Flashback FM to hear Scarface soundtrack cuts, and just driving around Liberty City with no objective was a genuinely new experience in 2001. The sense of freedom was intoxicating.

Why it matters

GTA III invented the modern open-world action game. Every sandbox game that followed, from Saints Row to Just Cause to Sleeping Dogs, is built on the foundation Rockstar laid here.
