The May 2024 revolt where Sony tried to force PSN linking on Steam players and got one of the fastest, loudest walk-backs in recent PC gaming memory.
On May 3, 2024 PlayStation announced that Helldivers 2 on Steam would begin requiring PlayStation Network linking for new players on May 6 and for existing players shortly after. The backlash was immediate because the game had already been sold in territories without PSN availability, and because players read the change as retroactive rule rewriting after launch. On May 6 PlayStation reversed the plan, but the story had already become a case study in how fast a platform holder can burn goodwill by underestimating PC users' tolerance for account friction.

The community's review-bomb campaign hit with enough force that the rollback came within days, not months. For one weekend, Helldivers 2 stopped being a co-op success story and became a global argument about account mandates, region locks, and ownership expectations.
Why it matters
This backlash matters because it showed how fragile cross-platform goodwill can be when platform policy collides with a live game's existing audience. It is already one of the defining PC-platform controversies of the 2020s.
