Founded in 2008 by Sean Murray and three others in Guildford, UK, Hello Games is best known for No Man's Sky — a procedural space exploration game whose 2016 launch became a textbook case of overpromised features and player backlash, including death threats sent to the studio. Rather than abandon the project, Hello Games shipped a string of free major updates over eight years (Foundation, Pathfinder, NEXT, Beyond, Origins, Worlds Part I and II), gradually rebuilding the game's reputation. By 2024, No Man's Sky was widely praised as one of the most generous post-launch supports in industry history.

Example

Hello Games went mostly silent for over a year after the No Man's Sky launch, with Sean Murray famously not tweeting during the worst of the backlash. The studio's quiet, ship-don't-talk policy became a model for post-controversy recovery.

Why it matters

Hello Games proved a small studio can survive a catastrophic launch by sustained, free post-launch commitment. The 'No Man's Sky redemption arc' is now industry shorthand for the ambitious but achievable comeback path.
