The most cinema-obsessed designer in games — and the rare creator whose name on the box sells the box.

Joined Konami in 1986 wanting to be a filmmaker, Kojima directed Metal Gear (1987), the original stealth action game, and built it into a franchise (Metal Gear Solid 1-5, 1998-2015) defined by long cutscenes, breaking the fourth wall, and dense political commentary. After a public falling-out with Konami in 2015, he founded Kojima Productions and shipped Death Stranding (2019) and Death Stranding 2 (2025) with Sony, plus the upcoming OD with Microsoft. He is one of the few game directors with serious cinema-world cachet (collaborations with Guillermo del Toro, Mads Mikkelsen, Norman Reedus, Léa Seydoux).

Example

Metal Gear Solid 2 (2001) was famously a bait-and-switch — marketing positioned Solid Snake as the protagonist, but most of the game is played as the rookie Raiden. The 'meta-betrayal' was so divisive at launch and so vindicated in retrospect that it became the textbook example of player-expectation subversion.

Why it matters

Kojima is the proof that 'auteur' is a viable AAA category — that a single director's brand can command platform-holder money on every project. His career arc from Konami to independent studio is the modern blueprint for the high-status game director.
